Additional Details

McCurry's famous photograph of a young girl was taken at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp, in Pakistan, during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. For seventeen years, no one in the western world even knew her name. Seventeen years later, McCurry and a National Geographic team traveled to Afghanistan to search for the girl.

In 1985, Sharbut Gula was but 12 years old; in 2002, McCurry and Gula reconnected. They remain in touch and communicate regularly.

In June of 1985, the portrait was featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine, and is considered one of the most famous and popular National Geographic Magazine images shot on assignment.
