first edition in italian, first issue, of the first practical treatise on navigation, originally published in 1545 in Spanish. The full-page map depicts ships on routes between Spain and the New World. Medina was a cosmographer and examiner of pilots at the Casa de Contratación in Seville, the agency in charge of Spanish colonial exploration and trade.
