Additional Details

This volume contains the first appearance of three important contributions toward the development of the Atomic Bomb: Disintegration of Uranium by Neutrons: A New Type of Nuclear Reaction, co-written by Meitner and Otto Frisch, (pages 239-40); Physical Evidence for the Division of Heavy Nuclei under Neutron Bombardment, by Frisch (page 276); and Liberation of Neutrons in the Nuclear Explosion of Uranium, co-written by Hans von Halban, Frederic Joliot, and Lew Kowarski (pages 470-71). The discovery and understanding of nuclear fission made possible the first nuclear chain reaction produced by Enrico Fermi and his collaborators in 1942. PMM 422b-c-d.
