.The Swiss artist M. P. Deschwanden (1811-1881) was greatly influenced by the art of the Nazarene artist Friedrich Overbeck whom he went to see in Rome in 1840. His work was studied in an essay by Mathilde Tobler, published in the catalogue of the seminal exhibition on Swiss religious 19th century-painting "Ich male fromme Gemüter" Zur religiösen Schweizer Malerei im 19. Jahrhundert<>, Luzern 1985, pp.53-118.
