Additional Details

John Melish's map of the United States from the 1827 edition (3'rd) of Carey & Lea's American Atlas. This map differs greatly from the Melish map used by Carey & Lea in the first two editions of the American Atlas published in 1822 and 1823. Virtually all of the rivers in the west are redrawn to show different configurations, especially the Lewis and "Clarks" rivers in the north-west. The United States border now veers off to the north along the Rocky Mountains in an early support of the American claim to what is now British Columbia. In Mexico the mountain ranges are completely redrawn and the rivers flowing west in Upper California are reconfigured. In Texas the course of the Red River is changed and the mountain range south of it is removed. In southern Florida the configuration of rivers and lakes is modified.
