This large canvas is an excellent example of Merton Simpson's refined abstraction of the early 1960s. His painting displayed a sophisticated aesthetic influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of New York, the modernism of Paris, and his love of improvisation in jazz. Later in 1963, Simpson's paintings became more political with his involvement in the Spiral Group, beginning with his subsequent 1964 Confrontation Series.
