Born in Charleston South Carolina, Merton Simpson showed an early aptitude for music and painting. He began refining his talent under the private tutalage of local modernist artist, William Halsey. He went on to study art at Cooper Union and New York University. Settling in New York, Simpson devoted his life to creating his own art and as an art dealer promoting the works of other African American artists.
