first octavo edition, published the same year as the quarto original. Disturbed by the spread of the theories and practices of Mesmer and his followers, Paris medical authorities persuaded Louis XVI to appoint a commission of members of the Faculté de Médecine and the Académie Royale des Sciences to investigate animal magnetism. Their report, as well as another prepared independently by a group from the Societé Royale de Médecine, found no scientific basis for Mesmer's doctrines and effectively put an end to the movement in Paris, although its popularity and influence elsewhere continued undiminished into the 19th century.
