Additional Details

The mat was inscribed by famed animation producer Joe Barbera to John F. McNeill, his former principal at Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, NY. The cel was intricately inked in multiple gouache colors by the studio ink and paint department, and appears to have been specially created for the purpose of this gift, as no other examples of the cel are known to exist.

Joe Barbera gained fame in the world of West Coast animation, where he partnered with Bill Hanna to produce the Tom and Jerry series for MGM, and then co-founded the studio Hanna-Barbera--but his roots were in New York, where he was born and raised, studied at Art Students League and Pratt Institute, and began his animation career at Fleischer and Van Beuren Studios in Manhattan, and Terrytoons in New Rochelle, NY.
