"Chieftan." Costume design for "First Inca Indian Chieftain" in U.S. production of Peter Shaffer's play, Royal Hunt of the Sun, 1965. Watercolour, ink, pencil, and chalk paper. 22 x 13 inches. Inscription in upper left: "'The Royal Hunt of the Sun' U.S.A." Inscribed and signed in upper right: "To Vira, With thanks and appreciate of this and other things, Michael."

The Royal Hunt of the Sun premiered at the Chichester Festival by the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain. The first Broadway performance took place at the ANTA Playhouse on October 26, 1965.

Michael Annals began his career designing sets and costumes for the Royal Victoria Theatre in London. In 1963, he joined the newly formed National Theatre Company. The Royal Hunt of the Sun was his first major success. He went on to have an international career, designing for the theatre, ballet, opera and film. Annals frequently worked in the United States and was Associate Professor of Scenic Design at Yale in 1966-1967. In 1984 he gave up the stage and took up photography and illustration.
