In Germany, after the Second World War, America invested in an interesting network of social and cultural propaganda via "American Houses," a series of exhibitions that highlighted American architecture and lifestyles and the domestic possibilities which it afforded (see Swann Modernist Poster catalogue 1970, lot 97). Engelmann was the obvious choice to be commissioned to design the posters for the exhibition in Munich, as he had emigrated to America and only returned to Germany in 1949 where he became the Art Director of Munich's Neue Zeitung. This is a pure constructivist poster, perfectly organized without being cold and dull. Engelmann gained full recognition and fame as a designer in his advertising campaigns for Pirelli and Roth-Handle cigarettes. Kaltenkrieg no. 169, p. 68.
