MICHAEL GOLDBERG
Untitled (from Odes).

Color screenprint, 1961. 447x367 mm; 17 5/8x14 1/2 inches, full margins. The deluxe edition of 19, aside from the regular edition of 200. Signed, dated, numbered 7/19 and inscribed "Special Edition" in pencil, lower margin. Published by Tiber Press, New York. A superb impression with strong colors.

Michael Goldberg (1924-2007) was close friends and sometimes collaborator with other New York artists central to Abstract Expressionism such as Grace Hartigan, Alfred Leslie, Larry Rivers, Joan Mitchell and Frank O'Hara. He studied painting with Hans Hofmann during the 1940s and, in 1955, moved into a loft on East 10th Street near the studios of Willem de Kooning and Milton Resnick. He developed a style, in order to work more rapidly and gesturally, using wide brushes and spatulas.

This broadly-drawn style is manifest in the current lot, one of several prints he made to accompany O'Hara's verse in Odes published by Tiber Press (Hartigan, Leslie and Mitchell also contributed prints to this series, see lots 516, 530 and 533).
