From 1936-1939, during the Spanish Civil War, Franco and his army were supported by the larger fascist regimes of Europe, specifically Germany and Italy. The Republican forces, hoping to spark support both within Spain and around the world, initiated a mighty propaganda effort and released hundreds of posters championing various aspects of their cause. Designed in a direct style, using a modernistic and graphic vocabulary, many of them also employed photography. Palette p. 121, Carteles 445, p. 268, Berman p. 101.
