MIGUEL COVARRUBIAS PAGEANT OF THE PACIFIC. Group of 6 poster maps. 1940.
Sizes vary, two maps 19x25 inches, three maps 25x38 inches. H. S. Crocker.
Condition varies, generally A-. Paper.
These six maps were based on murals Covarrubias designed for the Pacific House at the 1939 San Francisco World Fair. They were issued as the Pageant of the Pacific by the San Francisco Bay Exposition Company one year later (and then again in 1943). The colorful maps, in Covarrubias's inimitable caricature style, are titled: Peoples of the Pacific, The Fauna and Flora of the Pacific Area, Art Forms of the Pacific Area, Economy of the Pacific, Native Dwellings of the Pacific Area, and Native Means of Transportation in the Pacific Area. Originally sold in a portfolio with an accompanying booklet describing the story of the maps, the maps generally appear folded as issued. The maps offered here were never folded.
