MIHALY BIRO (1886-1948) ABADIE AXA / HULSEN PAPIER.
49 1/4x36 3/8 inches.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases, minor staining and minor overpainting in image and margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
Biro was the most promising young Hungarian graphic designer in the days after World War I. After the 1919 revolution he had to flee his native country. He worked in Austria and Germany and became one the boldest and most daring modernist poster designers. He still hasn't received the full recognition his work deserves. This strictly typographic poster is a good example of his inventive talent. With only three colors, he plays a typographic game with the brand's name and geometric shapes. A striking image that was probably designed to go on tobacco kiosks, and maybe even intended to be cut in half, it promotes a well-known brand of rolling papers.
