Matyushin (1861-1934) was an important Russian Futurist painter, theorist and writer. From 1910-13, Matyushin and his second wife, the artist and writer Elana Guro, were active in the Union of the Youth, an important avant garde Russian Futurist association. Beginning in 1918, Matyushin was teaching at the Imperial Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg, including a class on color theory, where he was close to fellow instructor Kasimir Malevich.
