Mildred Rackley was a member of the Taos Society of Artists before moving the New York in 1935. As an artist activist, Rackley headed the Unemployment Section of the Artists' Union. Rackley also worked for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. A natural organizer, she moved to Spain in 1937 to serve as a secretary and interpreter for the American Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy. During World War II, Rackley helped to unionize California's shipyards and worked as a designer and engineer.
