"I AM NOT . . . PREJUDICED AGAINST HOMEOPATHY" MILL, JOHN STUART. Autograph Letter Signed, "J.S. Mill," to David Masson ("My dear Mr. Masson"), thanking him for sending a pamphlet by Dr. [J. Rutherford] Russell, expressing surprise that such an uncommon person has embraced homeopathy, and stating his views on the efficacy of homeopathy. 3 pages, 8vo, written on first three pages of a folded sheet; minor scattered staining, owner's ink inscription at top of terminal page. "India House," 27 June 1847

Additional Details

". . . Pray thank Dr Russell from me for it & for the very handsome mention of my book. The writer is evidently not a commonplace person, & it makes me think better of Homeopathy than I ever did before to find that such a person has embraced it. To say the truth however, he has made me think more highly of Dr. Faber than I knew there was any ground for, since it appears Dr. F. is quite aware of the exceedingly imperfect state of his art--a conclusion which I had long since come to, & partly on the very ground which he seems to take, viz that the most opposite modes of treatment seem to be about equally successful or equally inefficacious in their practical results. Homeopathy no doubt has often been successful, or seemed so, but so has every new theory of medicine that has ever had partisans.
"I am not, however, at all prejudiced against Homeopathy. I know some of the facts which it is supported by & am very ready to back more of them."
Does not appear in Robson and Stillinger's Collected Works of John Stuart Mill, 1824-1963.
