" . . . My opinion is that the whole outcry against them is nonsense. Where there is no danger of insolvent banks, there seems to me no more objection to £1 notes than to £5 or £10. No doubt it is desirable to retain a considerable stock of the precious metals in a country to pay balances to other countries without inconveniences. But the metallic currency of England does this, more than sufficiently. Why then deprive Scotland of her cheap currency . . ."
