Batson (1864-1906), known as the "Double-voiced Queen of Song" because of her extraordinary range, was one of the most famous Black concert singers of the late nineteenth century. In 1887, she married John Bergen, the white manager of her first musical company. After his death, she married the author of this biography, singer Gerald Millar.<
