Additional Details

first appearance of one of the scarcest items by miller. Published as the Supplement to Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, No. 1,084. The only other known copy is at UVA. The patriotic poem begins with a minstrel song and continues in 28 sections reflecting voices of the miner, muleteer, negro, orator, the Oregonian, the hunter, the ranger, and the "people," with strong descriptions of the American West. The image surrounding the opening song shows the destruction of the Civil War and the subsequent peace and prosperity of reconstruction. BAL 13769.
