Additional Details

Milton Glaser created more than a hundred portraits of Shakespeare for the Theatre for a New Audience, a company known for producing contemporary plays and reinterpreting Shakespeare's works. In these illustrations, Glaser reimagines the author at various ages and as different races, challenging and expanding traditional views of the iconic writer. Glaser drew from the only two or three inconsistent historical sources available, which share just a few common traits: a high-domed forehead, facial hair, and a broad white collar. These vague similarities gave him limitless creative freedom to reinterpret and reinvent Shakespeare's image in his own imaginative way.
