MISTI (FERDINAND MIFLIEZ, 1865-1923) AMERICAN CRESCENT CYCLES.
59x42 inches. Schneider & Bouillet, Paris.
Condition B+: creases and tears in margins; repaired tears and pinholes in image; vertical and horizontal folds. Japan.
Contrary to the contemporary world of advertising, in fin-de-siecle France poster artists who specialized in certain fields would design posters for direct competitors within the same industry. Misti, a prolific disciple of Jules Cheret, specialized in bicycles. We know of at least eight different bicycle manufacturers to whom he leant his recognizable style and formidable talents. This and the previous lot are clear examples of how his identifiable skill was employed universally across the advertising spectrum. Each poster exudes the same kind of sophisticated evening atmosphere and depicts a similar elegant lady, handsome in her canotier.
