Philadelphia, 1846

Additional Details

Extremely uncommon and lucky to have survived given the materials used in its production. All the maps have copyright imprints dated respectively 1835, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1849, 1840. Apparently Mitchell was experimenting with new forms of printing maps and issued this atlas to see how popular it might be. It apparently did not sell well for there are no other examples of Mitchell (or his successors) publishing again these 6 or other maps using this new 2-color lithograph process. Rumsey 536.
