One of America's most popular poets and writers, Ella Wheeler Wilcox's (1850-1919) work was never acclaimed by the literary set as much as it was purchased and consumed by the general public. For her 1896 book "An Ambitious Man," an unidentified artist has created a striking, image using broad areas of flat color and no outlines. Although we do not know the artist, the monogram appears on one other known poster, advertising J. Manz and Co. printing house in Chicago (see Margolin p. 188).
