Additional Details

An army officer assigned to the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, Montgomerie supervised the successful triangulation of Jammu and Kashmir, "remarkable for its accuracy" (Markham), by a team working in difficult high-altitude conditions. He introduced the nomenclature of K1 through K6 to identify 6 mountains in the Karakoram range and later developed the system of training natives as clandestine surveyors to work in areas inaccessible to British personnel. Markham, A Memoir of the Indian Surveys (1878), pages 113-114 and 407.
