first edition. The first formally-trained British veterinarian, Moorcroft (d. 1825) travelled extensively in the Himalayas and Central Asia to procure breeding-horses for the East India Company. He was one of the first to call attention to the threat to British interests posed by Russian expansionism in the region, but his warnings were mostly ignored during his lifetime.
