The title "Letter to the World" is actually a line from a poem by Emily Dickinson, around whom the dance was constructed. Dickinson's poetry was integrated into the performance and spoken by the dancers. However, given the abstract nature of Graham's work, no one character was meant to portray Dickinson: each dancer symbolized a different aspect of her personality.
