Additional Details

A substantial letter from the "Financier of the Revolution": "All the contrivances I was master of was insufficient to procure any payments in England on your acct. . . . I am told your estate is a very fine one, worth much more money than you gave for it." This was two months before Lee's disgrace at the Battle of Monmouth, for which he was court-martialed and relieved of his duties as Major General under Washington.
