"A natural successor to Motherwell's other great book with Alberti (A la pintura, 1972), the present sequence of prints illustrates a poem written by Alberti as an homage to Motherwell during the painter's 1980 Barcelona retrospective"--Phillips/Zwicker, Grolier/American Livre de Peintre 35. Motherwell's interest in Spain and Latin America can be traced back to the 1930s. The murder of Federico Garcia Lorca by Fascists in Granada in 1936 greatly influenced his Spanish Elegies series. In the 1940s he spent time with Matta in Mexico.
