Two-sheet wood-engraved world map, 380x575 mm sheet size, trimmed to the neat line but nicely remargined; a few areas of loss in Europe and the border and a small area in the South Atlantic, linen-backed at an early date. Basel, 1532 or later

Additional Details

An elaborately-decorated world map, attributed in part to Holbein the Younger, extracted from Huttich and Grynaeus's Novus Orbis Regionum. "What the Muenster-Holbein map lacks in precision it gains in richness of artistic decoration. Huge sea-monsters, mermaids and an early high-pooped galleon embellish the oceans. The surrounding border to the map is filled with vivid vignettes or real or outlandish local scenes -- winged serpents, grotesquely big-lipped natives, hunting scenes and feasting cannibals"--Shirley 67.
