'The enemy are encamped at Petersburg in such a position that it is hard to get at them. General Philips went the way of all flesh yesterday and is gathered to his fathers. The Marquis refuses to correspond with Arnold who succeeds Phillips in the command. The day before yesterday Simcoe & Tarlton formed a junction at Hick's Ford. Yesterday Majr. Dick's corps & a small party of Curtis attacked three gun boats, took one with two twelve pounders, killed 30 men & made 13 prisoners.'
