The collected works of the visionary wilderness preservationist and Sierra Club founding president John Muir. Manuscript Edition set #413 of 750, with a holograph fragment in Muir's hand laid down on paper and tipped in to the front of Volume I. The fragment is a heavily edited early version of a notable quote from Muir's 1880 Scribner's article "In the Heart of the California Alps," later published in his 1894 Mountains of California: "[But in the midst of this] outer steadfastness we know there is incessant motion [and change]. Ever and anon, avalanches are falling from yonder peaks. These glaciers, [seemingly wedged and immovable], are flowing like water & grinding their flanks (& feeding them to the forests). These lakes [are lapping their granite shores.]" BAL 14774.
