Japanese-born Satomi moved to Paris in 1922 where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts. For a short period of time he worked as an assistant to Cassandre in his studio. This experience, combined with his own strong sense of design, helped him gain commissions in both France and Japan. "Unquestionably, it was under Cassandre's tutelage that Satomi learned to distill a subject down to its essence, blending pictorial representation and lettering into nearly pure graphic design. Using the sparest possible graphic elements and without tonal excess, the artist instantly makes us aware of the airline's global reach." (Crouse p. 21). The text along the border, an echo of Cassandre's typography for Nord Express, exists in several different variations and languages, depending on in which country the poster was intended to be hung: here it is promoting service from Scandinavia.
