Additional Details

The plates "as curious as their subjects" (Hunt) are indeed unusual and original by comparison to contemporary botanical illustration, set within landscape settings or against decorative classical elements. Many plants and flowers were from specimens collected by botanist friends of Munting and sent from distant places like the Americas, Africa and the Indies. Nissen, BBI 1428; Hunt 396; Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora, 45.
