MUNTING, ABRAHAM. Naauwkeurige Beschryving der AardgewassenWaar in de Veelerley Aart en Bijzondere Eigenschappen der Boomen, Heesters, Kruyden, Bloemen. Half-title, vignette title-page in red and black, engraved allegorical additional title, 243 engraved plates. Folio, 15 1/2x10 inches, original worn calf spine laid down to modern cloth covered boards; first seven preliminary leaves with a half-inch or smaller burn hole at lower margin, scattered edge dampstaining (plates 118, 125 and 243 with larger stains through image), occasional small marginal tears (plates 51 and 141 with larger closed tears into image), some plates with early ink annotations to the titles, several plates lightly browned and foxed, plates 139 and 140 supplied from another copy. Bookplate of P. van de Vyvere, Apotheker pasted to half-title. Leyden: Pieter van der AA; and Utrecht, Francois Halma, 1696
The plates "as curious as their subjects" (Hunt) are indeed unusual and original by comparison to contemporary botanical illustration, set within landscape settings or against decorative classical elements. Many plants and flowers were from specimens collected by botanist friends of Munting and sent from distant places like the Americas, Africa and the Indies. Nissen, BBI 1428; Hunt 396; Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora, 45.
