"For there was never any yet that wholly could escape Love, and never shall there be any: never, so long as beauty shall be; never, so long as eyes can see." (Book One, p. 10).

The first vernacular edition of this work was translated from the original Greek into French by Jacques Amyot in 1559. The French edition helped popularize the book, and its success contributed significantly to the rise of the pastoral genre in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This copy uses the English text from George Thornley's 1657 edition and is paired with Maillol's delicate woodcuts mirroring the romantic, rustic tropes of the story.
