Maillol, Aristide, illus. (1861-1944) & Virgil (70-19 BCE)
Les Géorgiques.

Paris: Philippe Gonin, 1937-1943 [1950].

Limited edition, two quarto volumes; copy 503 of 750 on Maillol/Gonin watermarked paper; illustrated with 122 woodcuts in total; loose as issued, in printed wrappers, all edges uncut; housed in the corresponding parchment-backed chemises and paper-covered slipcases (scattered light spotting; small area of toning and some spotting to wrappers; one chemise spotted); 12 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.

This edition of Virgil's Géorgiques was originally intended to accompany the Éclogues, which Maillol began producing with Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937) in 1908. Unfortunately, both projects were delayed due to the outbreak of World War I. While the Éclogues was finally released in 1927, the woodcuts and text for the Géorgiques remained in an incomplete state. It was only in 1937 that Kessler encouraged Maillol to complete the woodcuts for the present lot, which the artist finished shortly before his death in 1944.
