Ellsworth Kelly's first illustrated book pairs his stark images with the free-verse poem by symbolist Mallarmé. The lithographs demonstrate a remarkable understanding of working within the confines and structures of the famous poem's text, typography, and layout. The black-and-white images do not detract as much as they enhance the effect.
