Manuscript Commonplace Book. Quarto-format manuscript on laid paper, 186 pages, complete, all pages inscribed in brown ink, in neat legible hands, likely compiled by two writers, the first 140 pages are numbered and written in the same hand, and end with "Finis"; containing sections from various fables, including those of Aesop, Barlandus, Avianus, Abstemius, Poggius, L'Estrange, and miscellany fables; the next section, in a different hand, contains sections of theatrical works, viz., Etherege's She Would if She Could, and Man of Mode; passages of verse in French and Italian; and dated airs and miscellaneous verse, including several from The Village Opera, dated 1747; purchased in 1970 from Frizzell of Peeblesshire, Scotland; bound in contemporary limp parchment with extensive loss of covering material (approximately half) due to rodent predation affecting the front cover; spine and back cover present, sewn on alum-tawed supports, with ties of the same material, sewing intact, 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 in. Britain [perhaps Scotland], pre/circa 1747.
