The Roman Actor is considered one of Massinger's best plays. It was performed by the King's Men at Blackfriars Theatre in fall of 1626. This edition contains the names of all actors in the production. The work itself is based on Suetonius's account of the life of Emperor Domitian (likely from Holland's 1606 English translation), with supplemental material from other ancient sources, including Tacitus, Horace, and Dio Cassius. The Roman Actor was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2002 at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, and revived at the American Shakespeare Center in 2010.
