Additional Details

McKay's letter is remarkably candid on a number of issues, "It's no good dragging on a half invalid like this. Don't tell this to anyone but I suffer from cloudiness of the brain and get the very vivid and definite feeling sometimes that I shall become insane . . . My book represents the experiences of two intelligent coloured youths trying to find ordinary decent work in a Northern city . . . it is really a series of situations through which these young coloured men pass. One finally commits suicide, and the other remains a problem. Nothing is solved."
