Medici, Catherine de (1519-1589)
Edict of Amboise, Hand-colored Engraving of the Peace Negotiations.

[Antwerp: Hogenberg], 1563.

Folio-format single laid paper sheet with illustration by Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) colored by hand, text in German engraved at the foot of the plate describing the action above, as it occurred on March 13, 1563, six days before the treaty was signed, top left corner mended, 13 1/4 x 9 in.

Hogenberg depicted a number of important political events in the period surrounding the French Wars of Religion. In this particular image, Catherine de Medici is in talks to secure the release of the Prince of Condé and the Duke of Montmorency. The parties stand outside brightly colored tents on the Île aux Bœufs, while armed soldiers stand on the land adjacent to the water, with the besieged Orléans Castle in the background. The Huguenots had seized Orléans the previous spring. With the assassination of Francis, Duke de Guise, in February of 1563, a diplomatic opening allowed for a cessation of hostilities and expanded the right to worship of some French Protestants.
