The plot for the play is based on Cervantes's La Gitanilla, (The Little Gypsy Girl), a short story from his collection of novellas. In the story, a nobleman falls in love with the titular character, who challenges him to live with her family under an alias for two years. It contains themes of female empowerment and undermines socio-economic and class stereotypes.
