Montagu, Lilian Helen (1873-1963)
Prayers for Jewish Working Girls, Author's Presentation Copy.

London: Wertheimer, Lea & Co., 1895.

First edition, 12mo, inscribed on title page, "Miss Richman, with affectionate thanks from L.H.M., 3/16/99"; in original tattered paper wrappers, detached, 4 3/4 x 3 in.

Lily Montagu, influenced by Claude Montefiore and educated at Doreck College, was raised in a family of ten. Her father was a successful banker and politician who was dedicated to supporting impoverished people and advancing the Jewish community in London. Lily was a founding member of the Jewish League for Woman Suffrage. She also served as a social worker and magistrate in the juvenile courts of London and was an influential force in the Liberal Jewish movement. This early work was published when she was in her early 20s.
