Pauli Murray was an activist for civil rights and gender equality, a legal scholar, and later in life an Episcopal priest. Dark Testament and Other Poems is her only book of poetry, largely consisting of work originally published in periodicals between the 1930s and 60s. Of her poetry, Murray said, "I think the same thing that made me write poetry, Dark Testament, the same kind of ... I don't know whether to call it fire, the same kind of unrest, the same kind of response to situations, made me participate in activities.'" (Harvard Radcliffe Institute).
