Additional Details

Under the act of 28 July 1866, the 38th and 41st Regiments of Infantry were organized with colored troops. All of the officers had seen service during the Civil War. Out of these two regiments were born the 24th, 25th, and 10th Cavalry - the Buffalo soldiers.
This document is a muster roll from the 24th, containing a great deal of detail for each soldier, including the pay due and his clothes and tobacco allotment. Several of the soldiers have a paragraph next to their names, usually referring to some type of punishment. Several soldiers have the more serious crime of desertion listed. Signed 54 times by Brigadier General Henry C. Corbin, as witness.<
