Additional Details

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas (1762-1806) was born in Santo Domingo, the son of a French Marquis and a slave. He became a soldier at 18 and rose through the ranks to become one of Napoleon's favorite generals. Eventually Dumas became critical of Napoleon and was cashiered.
He had one son who became the novelist known as Dumas pere.
