Nares's 1875-76 attempt at the North Pole via Smith Sound, with explorations of northwest Greenland and Ellesmere Island, was the first significant British Arctic expedition following the search for Franklin. Although failing to reach the Pole, the expedition did achieve record Norths for both ship (82º28'N) and sledge (83º20'26"N) and discovered Capes Aldrich and Columbia, the northernmost point of land in the Canadian Arctic.
