This particular issue of Harper's deals in large part with the newly raised colored regiments. The front cover shows a white officer "teaching the Negro recruits the use of the Minie rifle." An exceptionally detailed centerfold by Nast, shows the First Kansas Volunteers in the Battle of Island Mounds, a very early skirmish for the colored troops.<
