Provenance: Private collection, Paris; private collection, Chicago.

Born in Bucharest, Dumitresco (1915-1997) was a French-Romanian abstract painter associated with the Réalités Nouvelles salon of Paris after World War II, a movement influenced by the art of Wassily Kandinsky and Alberto Magnelli. Other prominent abstract expressionist painters associated with the Réalités Nouvelles include Serge Poliakoff and Alexandre Istrati. Dumitresco later married Istrati and the couple developed a close friendship with fellow Romanian artist and ex-patriot Constantin Brâncusi (1876-1957) who made her and her husband the sole heirs of his work. Dumitresco and Istrati later co-authored an important monograph on Brâncusi's work. She and her husband are buried next to Brâncusi, in the Cimetière du Montparnasse in Paris.
